"Yukiwa" is a pattern said to have originated from the shape of snow crystals. It seems to have been used since long ago when it was known that crystals are hexagonal.
It's strange that it was used as a pattern even before it was understood. I'm curious why the first person who looked through a microscope thought to look at snow under it.
